Root Canal went fine

Jim did well with the root canal. He was in the dentist’s office for 4 hours but the dentist was able to keep him comfortable. Glad that is over.

Oxygen Saturation Competition

Jim received his fancy new oximeter today, so we played the who has the most oxygen saturated haemoglobin at our house game. Jim won.

Angiogram Recovery

Jim is in recovery and will be coming home at noon today. Jim’s nurse, Tammy, said that Jim is doing well and awake after the procedure.

Angiogram and Root Canal

On Wednesday morning Jim will have an angiogram. And on Friday he will have a root canal. Both, thankfully, will involve a bit of sedation.

Jumping the Transplant Line

Jim’s grandmother just gave us the heads up about an article in today’s L.A. Times about the lengths people will go to find a matching donor. “The supply of organs from cadavers is falling further and further behind demand — only 2% of deceased people are even eligible to donate and half of families who [...]

A New Home for the Blog

We’re very sorry to have moved the blog again, but it won’t happen again. It seemed like a good idea to host it at Jim’s server, but it’s just too too ridiculous to have to ask him to reset my password while he’s in the middle of work or, say, sitting in the oral surgeon’s [...]

UCLA Accepts Jim

Jim just got a call from UCLA to let him know that he has been accepted to their lung transplant program. He is not on the transplant wait list at either Cedars or UCLA yet. UCLA needs to go over all his tests and possibly do additional testing before they put him on the wait [...]

The Wisdom Tooth Incident

Jim had a tooth ache this morning, so we got him an appointment with a special dentist up in Torrance. We drove up there and found out that his wisdom teeth needed to be extracted today. So we drove straight to the oral surgeon who took two of the four out right on the spot. [...]

Happy Birthday Jim

This will be a a non-mushy post. Just the facts. The mushy part goes in the comments section. At 11:45am on Friday the 14th of October 1977 James Harris Gilliam III was born at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, CA. He was 8lbs 4oz and 21 ½ inches long.

More Information and More Uncertainty

Today Jim met with the folks at UCLA and learned more about their program and his diagnosis. Some of the things he learned today contradict information that he was told in the past, so we have some sorting out to do in this post.

Another Twist

The results of Jim’s MUGA scan were excellent, so his heart might just be fine. The cardiologist will do one more test and then the transplant folks at Cedars will take it from there. We’re a little confused about why his heart seems to be okay now. We’re guardedly optimistic. Jim has an appointment with [...]

So Far So Good

Jim’s blood seems to be squeaky clean and the cardiologist said some encouraging things today. The testing isn’t over yet, but they haven’t found any problems so far.

Flu Vaccination

UDATE: I interpreted the CDC instructions incorrectly. Flu shots will not be available for most healthy folks until October 24, regardless of how frequently you come in contact with Jim. You can find a flu clinic in your area by using this handy tool http://www.flucliniclocator.org/ Dr. Chaux recommended that Jim get a flu shot and [...]

Transplant Testing Underway

Things went well today with Dr. Chaux and the folks at the Cedars-Sinai transplant program. But we just can’t seem to have a doctor’s appointment without someone putting the scare into us. Dr. Chaux is going to test Jim for everything under the sun and assuming they find nothing, he could be on the transplant [...]

Welcome to Month Three

Jim called us on August 2 to tell us that there was something wrong with his lungs and eight weeks later our lives are completely changed. This evening Jim and his dad had ravioli for dinner and now they are watching West Wing and eating popsicles. It doesn’t get any more ordinary than this evening. [...]
