I have absolutely nothing to report. There have been no appointments with UCLA and no battles with the insurance companies. We are nearing the end of January, so HealthNet might very well get away without paying for Jim’s transplant. That would be unfortunate. In the meanwhile Jim seems to be doing better without all the [...]

Jim is officially on the lung transplant waiting list at UCLA. You may all begin celebrating now. In other news… Jim’s little sister, Kristen, fell down and cut her chin this afternoon. So we took her to our neighborhood walk in clinic where they told us that they do not accept Blue Cross PPO. Jim’s [...]

The insurance issues have been handled and UCLA expects to activate Jim on the wait list before the end of the day today.

HealthNet has thrown us another loop. They sent their approval over to UCLA yesterday, but they told them that the “medical group” now has to approve the transplant because this is a shared risk case. I have no idea what this means. When HealthNet called Jim yesterday they told him that the transplant was approved. [...]

HealthNet just faxed over the approval for the transplant. We are standing by for word from UCLA that Jim has been activated on the lung transplant wait list. We’re dancing the happy dance over here.

HealthNet is expected to approve the transplant by the end of the day today. We don’t plan to believe it until he is actually on the waiting list, but this is definitely progress. If HealthNet approves the transplant it will be nearly impossible for Blue Shield to refuse it. Jim may be activated on the [...]
Our friend, Paul, who comments here often has put us in touch with his mom. And now his mom, Helen, is Jim’s attorney. And Helen has been in touch with the primary insurance company. And I’m not going to call them the primary insurance company any more. HealthNet is causing Jim all this trouble. The [...]
Today Jim called his secondary insurance company to find out why UCLA has not heard from them. He was told that UCLA never sent in any paperwork. They also said that if he got the paperwork done now they could do the approval in 24 hours so that he would be covered February 1st (when [...]

Jim’s primary insurance company is questioning some nodules detected in his PET scan. They would like a biopsy or to wait a few months and have another PET scan. The oncologist and pulmonary doctor do not believe that the nodules are cancer, but the insurance company is doing what insurance companies do. So we are [...]
It’s been over a week since my last post, so a couple of people have e-mailed asking why we haven’t been posting. We had a nice holiday and Jim is doing well. Last week his primary insurance company said that they would fax their decision to UCLA by Tuesday. So we expect to hear something [...]
